CD ANTIKATHECON : PRIVILEGIUM MARTYRII (SILENTES MINIMAL EDITIONS)

Thick and spectral dark ambient, soaked with soft and flowing pads stratifications, wrapped in deep and penetrating low frequencies spires, enlightened by delicate and touching melodic inserts, profaned by echoes of reverberating metallic noises, clanging chains, circular mechanical movements, waves of indecipherable whispers, distant and suffering human voices... A great debut CD for Antikatechon, a project that showcases Davide Del Col's eclectic personality, already the unique mind of the Ornament project, and keyman of other recent collaborative projects such as Echran and Molnija Aura.

CD MAURIZIO BIANCHI / M.B. & JAN-M. IVERSEN : REKVIEM MB-JMI (CD SILENTES MINIMAL EDITIONS)

A "classic" minimal ambient album; just one long track, a bit obscure, of a static nature but unarrestable as a matter of fact and slowly developing, built with layers of soft and “round” sounds, heavily processed and effected, whose origin seems to be an organ... "Atypical" for sure, if confrontated with the huge and widely diversified productions of Maurizio Bianchi, this new album is probably one of the last and not to be missed releases signed by “M.B.”, since he has already announced his definitive departure from the musical scene. Another extraordinary collaborative CD, involving this time Jan-M. Iversen, an artist of international fame who managed to enrich and elaborate with great effect the "sound materials" provided by Maurizio Bianchi.

CD MAURIZIO BIANCHI/M.B. & CRAIG HILTON : PU94 (Silentes)

Here at last is a deserved and “rightful” CD re-release of this fantastic collaboration created in 2007 by Maurizio Bianchi and Craig Hilton. Until now this recording was only made available in a very limited CD-R edition. Extremely dark atmospheres, restless and dramatic… Sharp masses of metallic noises cleave pulsating substrates of low frequencies, mixed with magmatic agglomerates of more processed sounds of an unrecognizable nature… Moments of stasis and apparent quietness… Handfuls of minutes of an unutterable, hanging and distressing tension… Sudden showers of vibrant frequencies that emerge from nowhere and bury everything under an heavy and devastating sonic mantle… A real masterpiece of incredibly dark and subterranean music.

CD Andrea Borghi - Moltiplicazioni (Lisca records)

Andrea Borghi's solo album is ultimateley more rewarding for its (relative) sparseness, with some unspectacular but extremely effective laptop treatments adding some fizz to his thrummed fuzz bass jams. It's still a case of listening of how the sound of the bass, rather than the sound of Borghi playing the bass, interfaces with the technology. "Attrazione 2" comes closest to transcending these limitations, with Borghi scraping and rubbing the strings to give his Max/Msp patch something more colourful to sink its teeth into. But as with his parent group, it's all a bit too airless to make the necessary impact."

CD ENRICO CONIGLIO / UNDER THE SNOW : DIALOGUE ONE (CD SILENTES)

This is the first split work between UNDER THE SNOW and various artists/friends. Nearly an hour of suggestive "border" music, equally divided between the relaxing and ambient atmospheres contaminated with experimental elements created by Enrico Coniglio, and the low-fi/rough sounds and atmopheres crafted by Under the Snow (Stefano Gentile and Gianluca Favaron) - not so different but with a more dramatic, tense and hypnotic doom - built on deep drones stratifications, often hard and cutting, with a wide collection of noises, electronic hassles, ununderstandable wispherings, concrete moments... A perfect join-venture, a mix among two different music projects that gather coherence and inspiration to "sustain" a split album that showcases a not to be missed fusion of styles among the involved artists, oriented on parallel patterns, clearly increasing the value of their own personal and somehow different sonic directions.

CD DEISON : NIGHT SESSIONS (SILENTES MINIMAL EDITIONS)

A collection of fascinating and obscure "nocturnal sessions” alternated with more "classic" electronic parts based on sequencers and synthesizers, more abstract and minimal sonic sketches, involving and tense deep drones musical mixtures, distorted and dilated electric guitars, deformed human voices, more static and fluctuating typical ambient movements, cold inserts of pulsating and "techno oriented" sounds, suggestive atmospheres built on bizarre loops, flat organ backgrounds and low guitar notes, and then again arpeggios, piano clusters, field recordings, more typical "glitch" inserts and hisses... A wide range of original and catching solutions created with the help of many guests, the album includes contributions by Teho Teardo, Philippe Petit, Under the Snow, Jim Coleman, Franck Vigroux, Testing Vault and Annen Berg.

CD FARYUS & VADIM BONDARENKO : QUIET SONGS FROM MISTY PLACES (SILENTES)

Frail and delicate ambient atmospheres, clusters of rarefied piano notes lying on discreet drones, soft and evanescent clarinet riffs, suggesting and catching natural sounds... Light and ethereal pastel-coloured musical plots... Eight tracks, one hour of suspended and quiet sonic passages, flowing like discreet background, or to listen/see in a passionate mood, dreaming in silence, lying in gloom...

Wonderful ambient stuff from these two Russian artists in the same vein of some of Harold Budd's works... Well known for their previous works on Russian FARIA Records, Faryus in the past has also crafted an album in collaboration with Robert Rich.

CD YANNICK FRANCK & PIETRO RIPARBELLI : WHINNY MUIR (SILENTES MINIMAL EDITIONS)

A single, long, deeply moving, slow and expanded drone-track, built on everchanging sonic masses, low frequencies, strong electric/electronic sounds, field recordings, feedbacks, buzzes, hisses, rough distortions, sunken organ chords, subdued inserts of strings orchestral parts. Alternation of progressive crescendos, ambiental stasis, sudden, dramatic and catching dynamic shocks... An involving and extraordinary "trip" across an obscure sonic path, convincingly assembled in collaborative form by italian Pietro Riparbelli (K11, PT-R) and belgian Yannick Franck (Y.E.R.M.O., Idiosyncrasia).

CD Harshcore - Ponytail, Ponytales (Lisca Records)

"I expected a lot of noise coming out of my speakers, but I was happily surprised. I like noise, the anger and force of sounds. But this was something completely different. The sounds of Harshcore are based on analogue and poor electronics, bass, effects and tapeloops and consists of Luca Sigurta (tapes, electronics and junk) and Tommaso Clerico (voice, trumpet, loop, synth and fieldrecordings). In 2007 they released their debut album The Sybian Sonority and after this soloalbum the duo released since 2007 many split-cd's and cassettes, with groups like To Live and Shave in L.A and xNOBBQx. T. For this album Harshcore searches and finds collaboration with many other groups/musicians and that makes the album really interesting. The styles are different, from harsh techno to looped voices, from wicked rap to minimalistic electronic music or drony sounds. The track with Zeek Sheck is like free-jazz and the song with Madame P is really a surprise. A beautiful singing woman-voice highly inspired by Bjork and I mean this as a compliment. The artwork of the cover is made by Madeleine Boyne with a surrealistic phantastic attitude and that is exactly where this album is about. To create a weird phantastic world with a lot of space of freedom and exchange."

CD LE MASQUE : FU LANGUORE (OLTRELANEBBIAILMARE)

After several years of silence, LE MASQUE are back with a brand new mini album (23 minutes) of unreleased music... and there are simply no words to describe their poetry.

Musically speaking, it is a return to some of the atmospheres we heard on albums like "Il Signor Gustavo Coscienza" or "La Memoria di Venere", showcasing an acoustic approach and their usual poems that are simply stunning.

CD LULLABIER : VERITA' RIVESTISTE D'OMBRA (OLTRELANEBBIAILMARE)

Delicate and fragile dreaming atmospheres, melodic and hypnotic ambient light sparks, sonic landscapes both semi-acoustic and then close to shoegaze, introspective lyrics almost "whispered" by a simple and "gentle" voice, mainly based on evocative and shiny, delicate, and dilated electric guitar riffs, layed on discreet rhythmic backgrounds, sometimes simply backed by acoustic guitar chords, in a singer-songwriter mood. An intense album, all to discover; simply elegant, and at the same time mature and extremely touching... In the vein of LOW, IRON & WINE...

CD NIMH : KRUNGTHEP ARCHIVES (CD SILENTES MINIMAL EDITIONS)

After the post-industral / power-electronics "diversions" of hise recent collaboration with Pierpaolo Zoppo / Mauthausen Orchestra in "From Unhealthy Places", and "Forgotten Realm, the "second chapter" of the Halls of Mirrors projects with Andrea Marutti / Amon in dark ambient "territories", Nimh (Giuseppe Verticchio) returns as a "solo" artist in his newest "Krungthep Archives", rediscovering the sounds of his oriental ethnic instruments, collected in he Far-East, mainly in Thailand. The recordings of these "Archives from Bangkok" (the "City of Angels" or Krungthep in the local idiom) are often submerged with electronic sounds, drones, voices, urban noises, field-recordings, loops, rhytmic fragments, lively and dinamically reach sound waves. Otherwise, sometimes the traditional instruments own natural sounds emerge, giving life to suggestive and catching semi-acoustic soundscapes. New ambitious Ethnic-electronic-experimental evolutions stylistically located right among "The Missing Tapes" and "Travel Diary" previous CDs. All the contrasts of a geographical universe perpetually suspended between ancient cultures and an out of control modernism, perfectly translated in in music by a careful and sensible expert of those places and cultures.

CD OPIUM / SOSTRAH TINNITUS : STAIN (CD SILENTES MINIMAL EDITIONS)

Warm, involving, deep and penetrating sounds... Flowing sounds patterns, vibrating drones permeated by a discreet sense of tension, evolving in dark, obscure, foggy, nocturnal atmospheres, violated by raven voices, mysterious noises and sounds of metal objects in motion... And then concrete noises, confused and elusive melodies, feeble light flashes, buried echoes of human voices, distantr whispers, sudden passages of rough sounds, undefined nuisances, subliminal and hypnotic sequences, just like a recollection of unreal and dusty sounds from an old carillon... An extraordinary and not to be missed journey in the darkness, lead with great skill by two of the most remarkable artists coming from the Italian ambient/dark-ambient scene of the last decade.

CD SACHER PELZ & AMUN CELL : HIBAKUSHA (SILENTES MINIMAL EDITIONS)

Cyclic loops agglomerates resting on static drones intertwined by flashes of electronic frequencies; algorithmic manipulations of undefined sound materials moved by bouncing delays and recurring panoramic space variations; a sequence of metallic waves in continuous tonal variation, heavy dissonances and sonic stratifications in progressive and pseudo-randomic composition/decomposition; desolate silences corrupted by resounding echoes of entangled electric rhythmic impulses... Longly awaited re-edition of this incredible album by Maurizio Bianchi/Sacher Pelz and Sandro Kaiser/Amun Cell, which until now was only available in a strictly limited CD-R edition.

CD CLAUDIO ROCCHETTI : EVERY LIVE IS A PROBLEM SOLVING (SILENTES MINIMAL EDITIONS)

A suggestive gallery of abstract images, confused fragments of life and real living experiences, sights of urban landscapes... Noisy and electronic interferences, mechanical machines movements, concrete noises, low frequences fluxes, hissing sounds,  interferences, but also melodic acoustic guitar pieces, human voices and other field recordings... A brave, uncompromising and heterogeneous "decomposed" mosaic of avantgarde sound art beyond time, beyond any point of view and any geometric coordinates.

CD UNDER THE SNOW : DELTA (CD SILENTES)

Extended sonic fluxes of synthetic nature mixed with delicate acoustic and electric guitars chords and riffs, crowd noises, indefinite and fading melodic "spots" of unknown origin, feedbacks, echoes, pulsations, vibrations, cracklings, rustling waves in continuous movement... But also sudden pauses, unpredictable and improbable inserts of folk blues radio transmissions, crystal clear water sounds, static, wrapping and dramatic electronic weaves, metallic tickings... An extraordinary range of sounds and atmospheres for this new, challenging and really particular experimental-explorative project by Stefano Gentile and Gianluca Favaron.

CD VipCancro - Tropico CD (Lisca records)

"Bassist/laptopper Andrea Borghi and his milanese four-piece Vipcancro sound like the kind of guys who would eat the new analogue psychedelicists for breakfast. In addition to Borghi's mile-deep deposits of bass silt, they ladle on tapes, percussions, electronics and the keening ululations of vocalist Nicola Quiriconi in the Goth-with-stomach-cramps style. That's a lot of sonic matter to wade through, and the textural excess starts to wear thin pretty soon. (Wire)

CD VOLUME SICK : NIGHT RIDER (CD OLTRELANEBBIAILMARE)

A "lost" album from 1993... Well known for their "Six Razor Blades"album published in 1991 by Contempo Records, Volume Sick were born from the ashes Rinf (one of the first italian new wave projects) and published also a couple of 12" before disappearing... Now we have the chance to finally discover this album, originally recorded for a possible Contempo releases but "lost" after the bankrupt of the famous label. The album is produced by Paolo Favati (well known for his wonderful work with Pankow during the 80’s and the 90’s)... Night Rider sounds actually in the same vein of Talking Heads, with a weird sense of humor and great rhythms. Guest on one song Billy Blade from Italian legendary band GazNevada… The drawing on the front cover is an original made by Tanino Liberatore. Don't miss it!

CD Z'EV : THE DEEP PATH (SEVEN SOLAR METALS)

A monumental album, three impressive tracks in which Stefan Joel Weisser, a.k.a Z'EV, legendary avantgarde experimental artist, master of percussions and live performer of worldwide fame, collects and exhibits all his bravest and incredible sonic solutions, mixing and alternating enormous, deep and sometimes exploding and devastating sound masses based on low frequences, noisy metalllic sounds, gongs and cymbals stratifications... All channelled in resonant time "tunnels" where every sonic element has infinite decay, entangled through suggestive cyclic echoes and reverberations, infinite delays, long decays, mixing  and completing with the other sonic weaves, for an absolutely important catching and unique listening experience. Un unmissable masterpiece.

CD Kazuya Ishigami / Kentaro Takei "split" (Neus-318)

Two split releases, and both involving label owner Kazuya Ishigami. The first one is ‘just’ a split release, containing three of his pieces and three by one Kentaro Takei. His three pieces are collisions in the world of pure electro-acoustic sound and electronic music. The acoustic sounds, of which it is hard to decipher where they come from, but are best described as rumbling of contact microphones meet up with sparse sine wave like electronics. Sparseness seem to be his goal, but he is just a bit too sparse to be fully interesting for the amount of time his three pieces take up here. Of more interest, also about half the length, are the pieces by Ishigami, whose work is entirely created in the world of computer processing. He composed for INA-GRM, so that may explain this a bit. From the various releases I heard from him, this trio of piece is certainly one of the more interesting ones. Avoiding the usual trap of tumbling sounds and glissandi, his pieces are quite concentrated affairs of closely knit sound files working along and against eachother. Easily his most interesting work to date.(vital weekly)

CD ISHIGAMI Kazuya / KATSUFUJI Tamako "Akari Tsuketooka" (Neus-318)

The other split release is with a female composer called Tamaki Katsufuji. She also worked at INA-GRM. Both use here spoken word by Kenichi Higashino, who is a scroll painter and story teller, telling what we see. Not an easy job if you haven’t mastered the Japanese language. That is a bit of a problem with this release, since the voice is pretty much upfront and present in this release. And since we don’t know what these stories are about, its hard to see how they relate to the music. Is the music supportive, contradictory? Hard to say, but I think its more supportive of the story, rather than working against what is told. Quite an amount of acoustic objects and bits of computer processing. What I thought was good was there isn’t much difference in approach and execution by both composers. Now that could be a problem if it was ‘just’ a split disc, but here the connection, the voice of Higashino, makes the whole thing into an unified whole complete release. (FdW)

CD Kikuchi Yuknori / Ishigami kazuya / Miyazaki Tetsutya " LUMINOUS" (Neus-318)

Three-way split release with solo work from three members of Japanese electro/acoustic improvisers Billy?. Group leader and label boss Yukinori contributes seven tracks that move from intensely magnified Aube-style tectonics with skittering rhythms, echoes of shimmering melodic guitar and hallucinatory insect sounds. Kazuya’s piece is a 20 minute symphony for what sounds like a swarm of wasps hovering above a great industrial abyss while Tetsuya presents two electronic pieces that are extremely minimal and haunting and that blur the line between Industrial, psychedelia and primitive techno with alla the panache of the early Vanity sides. Indeed, the cabal of musicians based around the Test Tone label look to be one of the most interesting enclaves of underground activity in Japan to further the kind of radical compositional style of early tape music maestros like Joji Yuasa, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Kuniharu Akiyama et al.
