CD Accomplice Affair - Samotny Horyzont , (My Hands Music)

The first situation that comes to mind while listening to Accomplice Affair is watching whales swimming in the vast blue ocean, somehow free and unaware of the dangers that lie above their massive strange head. Filled with light ambient drones and clean textures, as well as fine guitar riffs that will make you forget everything that's making you angry. It will force you to sit back on the park bench and watch the birds fly around you, and will transport you to another place. It will make you realise there is so much beauty in the world that you don't know, and you must find out where it is before it's too late. Guitars with delay invade your head and fill it with that great numbness we sometimes must have. The tracks are quite minimal and similar to one another. Do not expect dark textures and evil drones. This work is for those stressed out people in need of a relaxing moment. It is ideal for a yoga session or some sort of tantric sex with your partner. Be very careful not to fall deep asleep, however. It might actually induce you into a long blissful coma, one from which you might never want to come out. Listening to too much of it can mellow you down completely, but it can also totally make you bored, because of the endless use of similar synths and effects. The whole work follows the same idea all the way through, like if someone is blowing flowers onto your face, hugging you and running together through a field of sunflowers with no visible end or no conscious starting point. One can almost feel the numbness at some parts of this album. If you are into these kinds of ambient textures, nice and lightweight sounds that could actually lift you from the ground if you get into it for too long, then it's good stuff. My suggestion is to turn on the Discovery channel and watch the fish swim through the sea, sit back, put Accomplice Affair on the headphones and enjoy total bliss as it drives your mind into the ocean.

CD AUBE "imagery resonance" (Aquarellist)

After a lot of collaborations, reworks and live releases of the last few years, this is finally a full length studio solo album by Akifumi Nakajima. Recorded using percussion synthesizer amdek pck-100, it shows the great sound manipulations talent of this japanese artist at its best. "Imagery Resonance" is one of the most atmospheric and at the same time diverse work of the project to date - drone ambient and subtle noise morphings live in good harmony with rhythmic parts and electronic structures, adding another brilliant to Aube discography. CD-R baradelan = lange vor dalem (tosom)

For unclear reasons the release by Baradelan took several years before it became available. Whoever Baradelem is we don't know, but we learn that the music is based 'on field recordings made at megalithic buildings and places throughout Northern Germany, such as Gromlechs, inside graves chambers, hills etc.'. I am not sure if Baradelan performed any sounds there, or that we get some treatments of those field recordings. I assume the later. Rain drops captured in those caves are treated and made into music. For some odd reasonI was reminded of the A.B.G.S. release 'Bunkerschallung', although of course something different, but it had the same natural reverb thing going on, like being trapped inside a cave yourself. Also Lustmord's 'Heresy' seems to me a source of inspiration. I liked this release because it doesn't fall into the trap of anything 'magick' or 'ov ritual'. It becomes rather dark and moody atmospheric pieces of environmental sounds and nothing more. The story you can think of yourself, and that's fine enough, as far as I'm concerned.review by Frans de Waard

CD BLACK SUN PRODUCTIONS & VAL DENHAM "Somewhere Between Desire And Despair" (tourette)

Entre la musique de cabaret, la dark électronique et le post-punk. Souvent proche des 1ers Coil.

Somewhere Between Desire and Despair opens with the haunting atmospheric drone of 'A Tale of Two Cities' with Denham reciting lines from Charles Dickens. From then on much of the first half of Somewhere Between Desire and Despair flirts with various forms of electronic music. It's clear from 'Cobalt Blue' that Massimo and Pierce haven't forgotten their past association with Coil, as it picks up on the rhythmic shuddering Coil-like electronics with Denham's voice pitched deep and treated, alongside passages of sped-up processed vocals. Val Denham is something of a character and, at times, she sounds like a Northern housewife reared on a diet of glam records. 'Stars', a Denham collaboration with Testing Vault, goes all downbeat with dark electronics, featuring Denham's idiosyncratic take on a pop vocal. Denhams' voice is almost helium-fuelled on the disco-chug of 'We Are The Hydrogen'. 'Eat Us Mother!' foregoes the electronics for a surprisingly sparkly run through post-punk dynamics. Denham picks up on a rock persona teasing the listener with her shrieky and screechy vocal careering over booming bass and discordant guitar scrapes from her longtime collaborator Oli Novadniek.

I asked Peter for the permission to do a recording centered on his private universe. He agreed and sent me a load of sound and video clips, which he'd collected and put into context. I guess it's fair to call this album a conceptual piece". Produced by Erik Jarl (IRM).

CD-R karl bösmann = das kind in der küche (tosom)

Two debuts on the Tosom label, the German label dealing with the more experimental things in ambient music. 'Das Kind In Der Küche', meaning the kid in the kitchen, by Karl Bösmann has three lenghtypieces and the basic material are atmospheric soundscapes, but by adding sound effects, other sounds and more electronica, Bösmann moves away from the usual dark ambient music and goes into a slightly more rhythmic mood. His use of percussive sounds are minimal, but also a bit ethnical. In 'Begegnung Mit Verachtetem' things are a bit more 'normal' again, but in the title piece, we hear a somewhat distorted organ and far away child cry. Although this is fairly interesting stuff, the pieces are a bit overlong with not always enough variation to keep up the tension of a piece. But it's a promising start. review by Frans de Waard

CD-R burma project = syntestezia (etalabel)

Burma Project is a project of Marcin Burminski. His tunes are like dark ambient and experimental music. Burma Project creating an emotive and ethereal fusion of panoramic soundscapes. The first album “Synestezja” you can buy on this side:www.etalabel.com Generally speaking I'm not a fan of our Polish ambient/industrial scene. I think that most of our projects present average or poor artistic level. That's why I'm always really glad when I get so nice material from so unknown Polish artist. We play Dark Ambient here. I'd say Marcin Burminski presents here this kind of Ambient characteristic for some artists connected with Cyclic Law label. I'm talking about so called "cosmic" moods. You know, far galaxies, unexplored outer space and - infering from the titles of tracks - perhaps searching for the beginnings of human race somewhere out there, millions of light years from the Green Planet... Who knows? Anyway, BURMA PROJECT is more modest, with less tracks, less sound ornaments than more known Cyclic Law buddies. I don't say it's wrong - it's like taking away all the musical "trinkets" from Visions or Hildebrand and leaving a listener only with dark essence. In few tracks we can find more light, soothing glimmers or fragments of melody, but all in all it's quite dark here. Like most Dark Ambient releases it's good to listen to "Syntestezja" (what the hell does it mean?) at night with headphones on your ears. Headphones are needed especially as the sound is not a killer. The sound is kind of "muffled", sometimes I have to guess what author had on his mind. So I'd work on this element. But all in all, it's quite good, especially that it's the beginnings of "career". I wish there aren't more such debuts in Poland. Stark

CD chaos as shelter = dawn syndrome (topheth)

"Dawn Syndrome" was recorded in 2001 and not released until 2005, on Israeli label Topheth Prophet, and appears to have only just arrived here for review two years late, suggesting the label were unaware of Connexion Bizarre and that their compatriots Chaos As Shelter have not produced a new album since. Nevertheless, a good album should be timeless and, having enjoyed a couple of decent compilation tracks by this dark ambient act some years ago, I was eager to discover how their more recent efforts had progressed. With no press material to accompany the disc and minimal orange and green artwork displaying just a stylised sunrise, only the song titles really hint at a possible theme behind the album, the unfortunate Middle East crisis being the first subject to spring to mind given the nationality of Chaos As Shelter. The inlay states the album is "Dedicated to the end of Kali Yuga", being the Hindu Age of Darkness, a surprising religious reference although one which could still refer to any number of conflicts in the modern world. The opening two pieces "Before The Dawn" and "Awakening" comprise a good pair of tracks are very effective in reflecting their titles, with subtle bells and chimes creating a weary and foreboding feel. "Borders" is a curious follow-up, featuring a found recording of a certain Isaac Goldfield singing in 1950, presumably in Hebrew, whose charmingly amateur tones, together with the crackle of vinyl, produce a worrying sense of vulnerability. "Whirling" is appropriately demonstrated with the sound of some kind of spinning metal object, rotating randomly under very tense and mystical washes of synthesiser; one of the more supernatural sounding periods of the album. Track five, "Watch Tower", catches the attention skilfully with a tragic Renaissance sounding string section, before disturbing clanking and rattling noises take over giving the listener uneasy sensations not completely unlike that of being under surveillance. Faint melodies continue in the sixth track, "Now Comes The Prisoner", with dripping sounds suggesting a dungeon setting and the mournful voice of guest singer Helena Dorsht possibly lamenting the demise of the prisoner in question. An ominously vague rhythm drives "Kam Jorra" along threateningly with a sick, chanting voice adding an extra level of menace. The final track of the main part of the album, "Break Dance", is thankfully nothing to do with hip hop music, and everything to do with breaking things! The exciting sounds of glass being smashed either inspire the destructive urge or alternatively give distressing images of evictions and dispersals. Finally, "Glass Watchers" is inexplicably classed as a bonus track, but fits the rest of the album perfectly and brings things to a fitting close with some strong drones, unsettling metallic and aqueous sounds and an accordion played roughly and malevolently before yet more smashing of glass! CD Crawl Unit = Aftermusic (Povertech Industries)

Throughout the years California has gained world wide rep as one of the most productive matrixes for experimental artists, in a wide spectrum of styles and philosophies. Within the medium of ‘new abstract sound’ Crawl Unit is undoubtedly one of the revelations of the last couple of years. It is the solo project of 24-year old Sacramento native Joe Colley, who also heads his own noise oriented record label Povertech Industries. Colley has an innate fascination for low-grade communications technology, and turns to "consumer electronics" rather than sophisticated digital equipment to create a cerebral form of music; powerful, organic sound tapestries that are both challenging and intelligent. He’s succesfully collaborated with bands like Small Cruel Party and AMK, performed with Daniel Menche, Merzbow, Killer Bug and Hijokaidan, and toured the States with Scot Jenerik in October of 1996.

CD Combative Alignment - ...and Outside Glows the Red Dawn (Malignant)

After several vinyl releases, "And Outside Glows the Red Dawn" is the first full length CD from this powerful and visionary German project. It can be seen as Combative Alignment’s benchmark recording, offering 6 tracks that work as a virtual musical thoroughfare to a more dreamlike, illusory state. Deeply brooding atmospheres, where omniscient layers of drones and reverberating sound currents meet measured, ritual percussion as performed under the glowing, gloomy haze of a primordial sunrise. And Outside Glows the Red Dawn shines a dim light on a world of obscure origin, full of dark Germanic mysticism and unearthly sonic terrain. On a whole, this is a more focused, deeper, and fluid recording than you’ve heard before, yet triumphantly carrying on the tradition laid down by previous releases. 2CD Dead Voices On Air - Fast Falls The Eventide (Lens Records)

Fast Falls The Eventide is aural provocateur Mark Spybey’s 11th album as Dead Voices On Air, and across a multi-decade career stirring pots experimental, existential, and otherwise, his is a sound that summons any number of nocturnal beasties from the ether. Blink twice, listen carelessly and you'll fail to discern the minutiae Spybey meticulously works into every one of the 15 pieces sprawling across the first disc of this 2-CD set’s eminent domain. Spybey works hard at his art so you don’t have to: rather, as the listener, the participant, the absorber, it’s more important to ignore categorical tags such as “industrial”, “ambient”, “soundscape”, et al, and instead gorge deeply on a wriggling, sometimes confrontational puzzlebox of sounds erupting from a bevy of mysterious sources. The title of this collection notwithstanding, Spybey’s been having his way with rhythm and noise for so long that the motifs he’s ascribed over the years are practically commonplace amongst the novice post-industrialist - or, hell, the post-whatever. Throughout the last 25-plus years, he’s plied his trade and remarkable sonic mojo both solo and in the company of many a forward-thinking electronic engineer, from guitarists such as Michael Karoli and James Plotkin, to fellow artisans like Skinny Puppy’s cEvin Key or Rapoon’s Robin Storey (with whom he feints sounds as Reformed Faction). It’s as Dead Voices On Air, however, that some of his most startling ideas emerge fully-realized and fully-armed; of course, to hear Spybey tell it, once art leaves the nest it’s up to (once again) the recipient to assume the role of engager: “My work is created in isolation from external references. That is the ideal I strive for. Only in this way is it possible to allow the listener an opportunity to create their own understanding of the music, or, as the artist Joseph Beuys once said, ‘One should resort to interpretation only in an emergency.’” Perhaps. Still, there’s much expressive bounty to be gleaned from these dark, dusky, evening-soaked works, from the first disc’s mix of ethnological drum cabals, windswept electronics and scraped edits, up through the immense near-quarter-hour title track, which finds Spybey revisiting the mortal atmospheric coils of former colleagues :Zoviet*France:. And pulling the whole enterprise together is the second disc’s first-time digital unveiling of Spybey’s opening salvo, the 1994 cassette Abrader, in conjunction with two unreleased tracks originating from the artist’s early gestations featuring contributions from the aforementioned cEvin Key. New or old, Spybey’s continuing vitality ensures these Dead Voices remain gloriously alive and kicking. Fast Falls The Eventide is a two CD set featuring the all new recording Fast Falls The Eventide on Disc 1. Disc 2 features the long out of print first release by Dead Voices On Air - Abrader - originally released in 1994 on cassette by Japan's G.R.O.S.S. label. This digitally remastered version of Abrader features two previously unreleased tracks featuring cEvin Key. Abrader and the two bonus tracks are only available on this CD release.

CD DES ESSEINTES - Mondo Macabre (Malignant)

DES ESSEINTES is Magnus Sundström (THE PROTAGONIST/NEGRU VODA). A classic example of what’s old is new! With Mondo Macabro, we’ve conveniently compiled all of your favorite des Esseintes vinyl releases since 2000, remastered them, boosted them to eye popping levels, and if that weren’t enough, added 3 bonus, unreleased tracks to top it off! 12 tracks in total, spanning the Muse (2000) and On/Off (2002) 7"s, the split LP with Magmax (2001), and the split 10" (2001) with Negru Voda. A great history lesson in the short existence of des Esseintes, each track on each subsequent release just seems to up the ante, with one track more crushing than the next.. a steady, doom filled procession of post-apocalyptic, tribal percussion, deadening, jackhammer rhythms, and dramatic, suspense filled atmospheres. CD Des Esseintes - Les Diaboliques (Malignant)

If Magnus Sundstrom's more well known project The Protagonist is DrJekyll, then his side project, des Esseintes can certainly be seen as a MrHyde..a more sinister alter ego, bent on destructive behavior, representing a liberation of the dark side and a more primitive being, that once freed from the bonds of conscience, becomes harder and harder tocontrol. And thus, we have des Esseintes. Based on a collection of shortstories by Jean-Barbey d'Aurevilly, Les Diaboliques is the first fulllength album for des Esseintes, and it's truly a masterwork. The result is an existentialistic inferno of various musical trash and harshrhythms, with clanging, mechanized percussion barely cushioned by amenacing ambience of cinematically styled electronics igniting thebackground. These are dark regions explored on the six tracks here, populated by stomping behemoths that threaten to crush with every step, and shards of visceral, dynamic textures that slice across the proverbialsonic landscape. And while Magnus' work has certainly garneredrecognition, Les Diaboliques may just solidify him in the lexicon of theindustrial public, or take him to a whole new level. Greatly appealing tonot only fans of old school greats such as SPK and Test Dept, but to thosefans of CMI and even some Hands material..

CD disharmony = frames (aliens production)

The fourth album from this Bratislava based dark electro/idm project. Rhythmic structures meet cinematic atmospheres. Harsh vocals enter and bring an aggressive, destructive aspect to lurking, malignant electronic soundscapes. There are many industrial elements in the tracks, thus fans of metal chimes will enjoy it. CD contains intelligent remixes from bands such as: Gaping Chasm, Anhedonia and Flint Glass. Edition of 550 copies, CD in oversize super jewel box. "Containing unreleased tracks of past years and 4 remixes by bands, such as Gaping Chasm, Anhedonia, Flint Glass, this piece presents a picture of complex arranged structures from abstract electronic soundscapes, horror ambient passages and speech samples (playing a big role, by the way), accompanied by emotionless distorted vocals and cold melody lines.Generally this album seems to be calm, reminding me human memories - melancholic stream of thoughts (tracks like sacred Places, Sacred Truth - Gaping Chasm mix, Vibrations are best representation), interrupted by sudden interference of rage and agression (such tracks as Masonic, Personal Prison). Each track makes me think to a sketch of some picture." (Heathen Harvest)

CD The Division - Mantras (Lens records)

Matthew Schultz has unveiled his newest endeavor, The Division. This sound project is a reconstruction of ancient spells and rituals reinterpreted aurally by one of the leading dark ambient artists of our time. With this newest disc - Mantras - Schultz has delved into the esoteric and ancient fraternal order of The Division. He has reinterpreted the traditional texts and scores of the order to create a beautifully dynamic and sometimes disturbing disc that synthesizes world music, dark ambient and magick or Matgick. Mantras is the first in a trilogy of discs that express all the aspects of The Division. Schultz was the founding member of Lab Report which included musicians such as Genesis P Orridge, Lydia Lunch and Chris Connelly. He was the inventor of the acclaimed A.T.G. or Anti Tank Guitar. He utilized this instrument not only with Lab Report but also with Pigface and performed on several of their early releases. In total Schultz has appeared on over 30 cds with 5 solo productions and 2 feature film soundtracks (Ivan's XTC and Snuffmovie) for Hollywood director Bernard Rose (Candyman, Paperhouse, Immortal Beloved). Schultz has covered an extremely wide range of styles from dark ambient to blues to jazz.

With six full-length releases, 2 EP’s and half a dozen compilation appearances, Encomiast are one of the most highly regarded and prolific artists in the dark ambient/drone genre. For this Self-titled CD - Encomiast mined their extensive early recordings and un-released material to compile, edit and re-master six tracks that give a glimpse into where it all started. Lens Records released Encomiast’s Winter's End CD in 2001 - a release recently described as ‘a delirious blend of dark dreamy blackened drones and shimmering cinematic ambience’ - the tracks on Self-titled revisit much of the same sonic territory.

CD-R Erthad "Gma" (Zhelezobeton)

Russian project Erthad, originating from Kazan, exists since late 90-ies, but until now still hasn't made any official releases and preferred to stay in underground, recording music only for himself and his friends. We have been endeavouring to change this situation for a long time and now we're glad to present this wonderful disk to your attention. "Gma" was recorded in 2002 with the use of voice and software noise synthesizers. If one says that the album's style is called "ambient noise" - is to say almost nothing. The disk has very specific atmosphere: this is a noise meditation, calm and detached from emotional fuss. An intuitive electronic pulse synchronizes with brain frequencies, rising and falling waves of non-aggressive white noise pacify thoughts, and constantly rustling high frequencies when listened to attentively evoke dissotiative sensation, dissolving perception in the sonic field. However, everything as always depends on a listener himself.

CD THE FIELDS OF HAY 'Songs For Nine Ladies' (Fourth Dimension)

Debut solo work from Theme's Stuart Carter, featuring a number of guests (including E.A.R.'s Sonic Boom and Theme's Richard Johnson, Zenial and Maria Husarska). Comprises five pieces of chemically-saturated textures, gentle enough guitar & zither strums, field recordings, oscillating electronics and buried voices bound to a space vessel on a course from the same planet which spewed Tangerine Dream, Pink Floyd's 'Atom Heart Mother' and Throbbing Gristle.

CD FIRST HUMAN FERRO "CORONA ASTRALIS"(OMS)

"Corona Astralis" is a consequential follow-up to the 2000 "Motherwards" CD and in the long run fundamentally represents development of the project, carefully combining early 1998-2001 death ambient/industrial experiments with recent ever generating solid electroacoustics, harsh electronica and dronesque synth multistructures, all to be ultimately finallized as integral one of the world in a grain of sand...

CD gaping chasm = fragments of war (aliens production)

From Slovakian electro label Aliens Production comes this wonderful offering of Dark EBM soundwaves from new signing GAPING CHASM. "Fragments Of War" maps out the roots of old-school EBM in combination with modern elements of industrial dance electronics. Subdued vocals and textured atmospheres figure strongly on the whole sound - creating a refreshing, minimalistic approach that channels slow-burning aggression with bristling energy to great effect. Firmly rhythmic, dark in design and futuristic in concept (despite the overall theme), "Fragments of War" offers layers of tightly programmed electronics, metallic sequences, sampled/vocoded vocals and brooding synths on an intelligently executed EBM template. Limited edition of 550 copies, presented in a DVD pack

CD global systems silently moving = altering the air (silentes)
ambient/drone/Quiet, flowing, rivers of murky low-fi atmospheric haze, with deep, distant, sub-bass pulses that seem to come from underground. Waves of shortwave noise roll up to the listeners feet like water on the shore. Introspective movements to get lost in. Repetitious, hypnotic sequences transmitted from an ethereal universe. All-pervading, and infinitely elastic. Widescreen glimpses into seven perpetually moving soundscapes that have no beginnings or ends. Epic patterns... rolling until the end of time. Lost souls wandering in a dense audio-fog. These are archival analog recordings made in Detroit (1996), and seem to be somehow affiliated with the 'deepchord brotherhood' (recorded by/produced by DC), however... the actual artist here is not completely clear.

CD H2S "Proteus Soundtracks" (Biostasi)

H2S is Fabio Degiorgi's own musical project and if you are an affectionate reader of our magazine you should remember him because of my previous reviews. PROTEUS SOUNDTRACKS is his first proper album printed on CD (not CD-r) which he released for his own Biostasi Rec. The album contains eight new tracks always in balance between experimental intuitions, industrial sounds and also a bit of post punk/new wave (because of some effected guitar sounds). The tracks are instrumental ones but the titles and their atmospheres talk for them. "Proteus Postojna speleological station", "Zimmerstrasse" or "Lunik 15 was watching you" are inspired by 80's cold war while "Thoa", "Disconnected life", "Abyss of existence" and "Humanisphere" are dealing with the evergreen theme of twisted human relationships. There's also an homage to Luis Bunuel on "Les images de Maria Latour" as well as the title of the album is inspired by Chrome's "Alien soundtracks". Fabio is good at creating an ambience in balance from isolationism and experimental mood and he also used some basic melodies which gives to the whole album a different sound paragoned to the usual "world is a shit and we're all gonna die in pain" approach. His music gave me a different feeling that made me think of a post catastrophic soundtrack took under the positive point of view. Instead of de-humanizing industrial music, H2S is humanizing it and Andrea Marutti helped him giving the final cut to the master recording. A really good work that deserves a proper distribution. It will be released on November the 24th and it's limited to 300 copies. Get your own one...

CD HOLLOWING / MAOR APPELBAUM - 'Collaborating Torture' CD (Topheth Prophet / HCB Records)

"Collaborating Torture" is one of the last known recordings made by Matt Gibney (Hollowing), who died in January 2006. Gibney, a member of SOIHADTOSHOOTHIM and label boss of the Rectrix label, was joined here by the prolific Maor Appelbaum (Grave in the Sky, Poochaltz, Vectorscope) to create a brooding and massive 54-minute track of dark, pitch-black ambient, hypnagogic swirls and industrialised drones. Sometimes subtle, yet mostly haunted and delirious, this is highly recommended if you like Wilt, Aidan Baker, Z'EV, Daniel Menche and John Duncan. Israeli import.

"This Forest" is the single side vinyl that italian noise honcho Kam Hassah (also headchief of the secondsleep records) done to the dokuro's catalogue. What Kam Hassah do with "this forest" is to move perfectly a dense stratas of sounds in a hypnagocic way, the rotary slow motion of drones, the layers of reverbarted voices, will bring you down under the moaning branches of this gloomy forest of sounds. A spiral implosion will show you the dark side of your soul where no light can shine and then... under again, in the viscous undergrowth where the beasts crawl. One track of pure bleak catharsis. CD KSHATRIY  "Slepok Soznaniya" ( Muzyka Voln)

Dark ambient, acoustique et électronique riche et energique.

The project Kshatriy appeared on the Russian post-industrial scene in 2004 and up to present has participated in several compilations, as well as released some solo and collaboration recordings on limited edition CDRs. Muzyka Voln presents the project’s first "professional" compact disk with the album "Slepok Sonzaniya" (meaning "a mould of consciousness" in Russian). This work is based on the concept of consciousness of a warrior, a galactic warrior of light, bringing to world pure knowledge, infinite silence, perfect balance, a moment of power and might, a flight of freedom, love, serenity, joy, light, unified time, eternal life, simplicity and bliss. The music of the project can be described as fractal dark drone ambient with lots of patterns, woven from various sonic fibres: synthesized drones, processed field recordings, acoustic echoes and rhythmic loops. Calm and profound, filled with resilience and hidden power, like an endless ocean of tranquility, energy and beauty.

CD HLADNA "Melting Water" (Aquarellist)

The reissue of early album from Saint-Petersburg noise artist Nikolay Kalmykov's project Hladna. Recorded in 1998-1999 and released as a very limited CDR, it is still one of the best records ever made by Russian industrial scene and the CD edition was long overdue. This is ritual ambient with some additions of noise and metal percussion, reminding of some classic Lustmord, Cranioclast or early Hybryds tracks, but the sound is more raw and harsh. The overall atmosphere of industrial decay is rather brutal and rusty than profound and mystical here, but there are obvious strong primordial currents in this music that wake up your archaic patterns. The release comes as a beautiful paper folder limited to 300 numbered copies.

CD HUMAN GREED 'Black Hill' (lumberton trading company)

Midnight at the Blighted Star' CD. The third album by Edinburgh's finest exponents of often haunting, yet always touching, ebb and flow. Includes very special guest appearances by Julia Kent (Antony & the Johnsons, Blind Cave Salamander), Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo (Blind Cave Salamander, Larsen), David Tibet (Current 93) and Clodagh Simonds (Fovea Hex). Gathering together material quite possibly amounting to their most accomplished yet, 'Black Hill...' is akin to being caught in the trail of a shooting star heading to the very place where dreams, fears, hopes and an overwhelming sense of helpless abandonment teeter over the periphery of yet another rather enticing void. At once beautiful, melancholic, slightly bruised and foreboding, the music here never fails to captivate. Also features fantastic exclusive artwork from Deryk Thomas and Alan McGowan CD VOLGA 'Pomol' (lumberton trading company) The latest album by this Moscow-based group, scheduled togo into production anytime shortly, alongside the above release. Thirteen wonderful tracks that, helmed by the powerful, dynamic, expressive and unique voice of Angela Manukjan, sway between electronica's moody yet accessible outer reaches, folk and other traditional music, plus the same kind of sensibilities ensnared so well by contemporary pop's more wayward souls such as Bjork and Sigur Ros.

CD Hypnoz -- "Breath of Earth"(ZHELEZOBETON)

Hypnoz is a project of Dmitry Zubov, a musician from Moscow suburb Fryazino, the town that endowed the lovers of post-industrial music with such names as Hum and Staruha Mha. His first composition was recorded in 1993, and during its existence Hypnoz has released one CD on the Moscow label Insofar Vapour Bulk, which gathered tracks from different periods, a couple of very limited CD-Rs, and participated on the compilation "Iznutri" by the Ewers Tonkunst label with a fragment of a composition from this album. Aside from Hypnoz Dmitry plays in several other projects: Zuboff Sex Shop (post-punk / new-wave), Circle Of Iron Tape (harsh noise), BRZB (electronics, with Alexey Borisov), etc... The basis of most of the tracks for "Breath of Earth" was recorded by Dmitry together with Evgeny Voronovsky (Cisfinitum) during their joint night psychedelic sessions, and this is evidently felt in their mood. Stylistically this can be called tranquil electronic ambient with a remarkable experimental touch – but who thinks about it while recording? Slowly twisting sound helixes, drawing inside the astral subspaces, pulsating rhythms, cosmic sounds of old analogue synthesizers, – all this produces an appropriate effect on the listener's mind, and there's nothing more to demand from music.

CD Iron Halo Device - The Collapsing Void (malignant records)

The Collapsing Void" has two distinct segments. Tracks 01-04 were recorded live at the Hurricane in Kansas City on July 31, 1996. The performance was composed entirely of samples taken from other bands. You can easily identify the obvious cuts borrowed from Nine Inch Nails, Dead Can Dance, Skinny Puppy, Coil, Curve, Lords Of Acid, SPK, etc., etc. The detailed letters from music industry lawyers contained within the liner notes show that Iron Halo Device is definitely not a band that fears litigation. Tracks 05-08 were compiled from home studio demos written and recorded in August and September 1995, utilizing the same guerilla recording techniques. Most of the sample material, however, is based on slowed or accelerated percussion and drones, rather than than readily identifiable cuts. Yet the trained ear can hear a bit of Lustmord on 'The Abduction of Winter' so the samples are not that well masked. A slithery, all encompassing sonic octopus of diverse samples manipulated into cohesive, illusive, mind altering songs. A jumble of percussive elements, a hazy rippling horizon of sounds and sonic textures flow from inception to realization with smooth, deceptive grace. You'll applaud Philip T. Easter for his daring sample based construction techniques and his dedication to the artists who contributed unknowingly.

CD June 11 "Matter is alive" (EE Tapes)

June 11 is a Belgian project set up by Jan Van Den Broeke (previously involved in The Misz). With ?Matter Is Alive? this musician composes a meaningful and refined ambient opus, which sounds like a pure soundtrack release. The astral atmospheres more than once remind me of Brian Eno. So it?s definitely not a coincidence if the opening cut ?By This River? is a cover version of B. Eno. The song ?I Know The Moonlight? again reveals the influence of Eno. We?re here visiting a quiet and prosper astral sonic universe. Instruments like piano, guitar, bass, clarinet and sax have been used here while 3 female guest vocalists take care of the singing. Some percussion parts have been added as well. The intimate atmosphere created by June 11 excels in a few pieces. There?s the totally chill-out ?Harold Budd (for Harold Budd)?. Harold Budd who?s an American ambient and avant-garde composer has been quoted as another main source of inspiration for the June 11. Another interesting cut is the last song entitled ?Ta Bouche, Ta Peau?. This song is half spoken half sung in French language and it sounds quite sensual. The female and male vocal parts in this song are quite remarkable in their interaction. ?Matter Is Alive? is a great and original piece of minimal ambient music!

CD Kryptogen Rundfunk "22SZ (Mechanoise labs)

Those of you that have been paying some degree of attention will already know Kryptogen Rundfunk from his split with Rupor Udara released not that long. The EP provided an opportunity to hear some key elements of his pet sounds: pulsating drones, low-key rhythms and more importantly, the mass of dense radio noise that has even become incorporated in his own label's domain name.

Recorded mostly in 2002, 22.SZ was scheduled to be self-released on Zhelezobeton, but delays due to other productions happily made it end up in our hands. Using gritty radio textures, shuddering digital noise and subdued rhythmic structures, this debut album elegantly combines simplicity with satisfaction. The layered sound hums and sizzles with the soothing quality of a crackling power line, achieving the glowing warmth of an electrical fire.

Judging from some of the reactions received during Kryptogen Rundfunk's live shows, there is indeed a sensuous aspect to the sound, a calm and seductive side that gently seeps into your senses with the flowing static. 22.SZ is your chance to treat yourself to it

CD LCEDP - De L'Utilité Des Convoyeurs (Angle Records)

Ever entered one of those old abandoned factories at night, wandering through its long desolated vintage hallways, discovering rusty machines put to a permanent idle state against their will, hearing your footsteps resonating around you towards infinity, up to the high arched ceilings of the engine room, hearing the distant sound of the water dripping slowly on the floor, having the feeling of breaking a near silence full of secrets and long lost memories? Like a sanctuary, the abandoned building unfolds its secrets one by one, revealing the true beauty that is hidden in its decaying walls, pipes, equipment…Beauty in decay, as Da Vinci would have possibly called it. Here lies a broken conveyor; there, hidden behind some monstrous crucible surrounded by sparse metal objects, one can see the entrance to a deep basement that seems to remain untouchable and totally shrouded in darkness even when one uses the most powerful torchlights …you gotta watch your step, as some stairs are missing and, down in the basement, the floor is punctuated with black holes leading to god knows where…but the reward is priceless. An intimate meeting with the very soul of the building and its yet-to-be-captured, redefined and recontextualized memories… Coming from the speedcore/hardcore area of electronic music, Montreal’s LCEDP now delves into the world of rhythm’ n’ noise. His first CD creation, De L'Utilité Des Convoyeurs, takes up where urban exploration leaves off, and strives to return all that decaying matter…to life. A vibrant life, a powerful cry of joy, sadness, anger and bliss altogether. The machines are operational again, and they have a lot to say. LCEDP listened to their message and translated it into his elegant yet stormy and abrasive musical style. The result, you hold in your hands. Noisy and punchy and ultra rhythmic, with a few more introspective and abstract moments … 21 impressions transcoded by LCEDP + 1 additional impression revised by ORPHX. Grey sleeve with tone-on-tone embossed patterns and insert. 500 copies. Mastering by Metarc. Artwork by Maria Chronopoulos. Source photos by LCEDP.

Hallucinatory ambient of double dosage.

CD Maeror Tri 'Yearning For the Secret ov Nature'(EE tapes)-2009 300 copies.

Recently I was looking at Discogs to look for some Maeror Tri information. It struck me that there was quite a lot re-released but not everything, as I probably expected. And now, a little later, this rolls into my box, and I am delighted, as this was one of those things that I didn't get when they came out. 'Yearning For The Secret(s) Of Nature' was originally released as a cassette only on Fool's Paradise, and might be one of the first releases of Maeror Tri outside their native Germany. It's dedicated to nature and has two tracks of around thirty minutes, the a and b side of the former cassette release. The title track comes second and its the better of the two pieces. 'Timeless Transcencion', which opens up here, is Maeror Tri as a pretty chaotic affair and not the refined ambient industrial troupe you may recall them, the forebarers of Troum. Occasionally this piece has nice moments, but its all a bit distorted(without being true noise of course), of various pieces recorded inrehearsal stuck together. But the title track does the (Maeror Tri) trick: a fine blend of processed guitars, field recordings, and god knows what else they were using at that time (I seem to remember, voices, oil drums and accordion also). Here too things can get 'louder', but throughout it seems to fit the right tension curve Maeror Tri were aiming for. This is the 'true' Maeror Tri sound, the one we love so much and which found its way into Troum later on. Fans of Troum should not miss out on this, and of course Maeror Tri completists shouldn't either. (2009 – F. de Waard - Vital Weekly)

CD Nazi Bastards From Aldebaran "Invasion" (Zhelezobeton)

An unknown artifact of the 90-ies Russian industrial scene! Having recorded several tracks in 1997-1999 the members of the project haven't done absolutely anything to make the result available for the public, and they just disappeared in complete obscurity... Years later the composition "Swastika Man" was released on the "Red Square" compilation by KultFRONT label. And only now can the gap be considered completely filled as this disk contains the full legacy of the project. Music of NBFA is a kind of old school electro industrial: catchy rhythms, melodies and well thought-out synthetic fillings of tracks. Various samples spice up the compositions, and their titles like "Illuminati", "Cleansing the Planet", "Nazi UFO Attacks Paris Nightclub" unambiguously talk about the ideological basis of this mysterious project.

CD NETHERWORLD – KALL: THE ABYSS WHERE DREAMS FALL (Angle records)

Always concerned with pushing even further its explorations on the side of ‘’drone’’ drifts, angleREC adds to its parallel series, that is the MONDES ELLIPTIQUES label, a new release in the form of the first official CD production of Italian project NETHERWORLD. This CD has the rather evocative title of ''KALL - The Abyss Where Dreams Fall''. Alessandro Tedeschi’s project previously gained a fair share of attention with CDR or mini-CDR releases on fine labels such as UMBRA, GEARS OF SAND, TAALEM/KOKESHIDISK! Alessandro also runs the GLACIAL MOVEMENTS label, which gave us, in 2006, the acclaimed CRYOSPHERE compilation. In a tradition that is anchored, at the same time, in avant-garde, ritual soundz and dark-ambient, with a typically Italian touch, NETHERWORLD gives a peculiarly and elegantly organic and palpable feel to sounds that, in the hands of others, would maybe fall flat …and it is as if the sound universe conjured by the magic of NETHERWORLD was strangely…how could one say? OCCUPIED. Each moment, eac h twist and turn of this sound adventure bears infinite richness and elasticity, at all times …those are rather ‘busy’ sound layers but each of the elements has sufficient breathing space and can differentiate itself from the other surrounding components. This antagonism represents one of NETHERWORLD’s greatest strengths. Another noteworthy antagonism: this tendency to propose us ambiences that are excessively introspective, subdued, withdrawn into themselves, but which, at the same time, expand, subtly dilate to occupy an incommensurable space. Upon the first notes (or pulses??) of the opening track, ‘’KALL’’, this infinite abyss, envelops us and our dreams sink, dissolve, reinvent themselves…The sound propositions found on’’KALL’’ have enough movement and density to please the ones fond of depth in their music, but the overall ‘purified’ feel will please the most discerning purist. For the occasion, MONDES ELLIPTIQUES once again used the mastering talents of JOHN SELLEKAERS @ METARC and it is CHRISTIAN SA LETTE who put his savoir-faire in our service for the design of the sleeve and images. Limited to 441 copies! Deluxe cardboard sleeve.

CD nimh = the impossible days (amplexus)

This album reveals Giueseppe Verticchio's incredible capacity to introduce us into an unique world of "concrete" sounds that sublimate the common nature. All compositions are means of communication. Concrete noises and electronic fequences are totally intertwined in an homogeneous spectral process. "Lost signals" features a minimal, obsessional synthesised micro-signal, endlessely repeated. It is progressively covered by moving, spherical electronic sequences, a cascade of natural sounds treated in studio. A brainey, lysergic ambience for hypno-like electronics and effects. "The Impossible day" is a short cinematic interlude for manipulated sounds, sustained by rotative buzzing synthesized sounds, discreet repetitive metallic projections. A real menacing sci-fi atmosphere. "Communicating rooms" starts once again with a bunch of evocative, familialr sounds, systematically re-worked with reasonaing electronic noises in order to create some dreamy-like / nightmarish mentalscapes. In "Back to Teheran", the subjective cinema for the ears carries on with an intense orchestration of concrete sounds taken from everyday life, ordinary rituals and public transports. The electronic treatments add an aura of mystery. It invites the listener to open his senses to new kind of percpetion and interpretation. The album ends with the relaxing, cloudy & floating "The final challenge". Certainly among the most environnemental, cinematic albums from Nimh. "The Impossible Day" is a very personal work, a real immersive trip throw colourful sounds. It's indispensable to give several listenings to appreciate all the facets & metaphoric visual expressions. For curious prog (electro) heads!

dark ambient/ritual music/symphonic/Ideally inspired by the Inquisition era, like some titles of the tracks may suggest, "Whispers from the Ashes" presents Nimh (Giuseppe Verticchio) and Nefelheim joined together for the production of a dark oriented CD that alternates obscure and haunting atmospheres with more gloomy and sometimes dramatic and highly evocative episodes. Like in a disquieting voyage to a far away past, in a stakes and witches age, featuring persecutions of heretics and superstition. A wonderful trip in vein of Raison D'Etre.

CD kristoffer nyströms orkester = brakehead (malignant records)

Kristoffer Nyströms Orkester (KNO) is a collaborative project between Peter Nyström (Megaptera/Negru Voda) and Kristoffer Oustad (V:28). A true sonic beat down, done in full Scandinavian style, with a battery of iron fisted rhythms hammering down in a thunderous downpour, and the caustic reverberations of the analog doom machine grinding and screeching in a symphony of clangorous and distressed beauty. This is an album that is as majestic as it is bleak, capturing the essence of old school Swedish industrial, but forging a new path towards a dark future. From auralpressure.com: "Brakehead" is a phenomenally majestic piece of dark ambience and noise that will leave you totally awe struck. The visceral raw power of the electronics is a thing of untamed beauty that heralds in a new era by which others must now be judged against." Guts of Darkness called this THE industrial disc of the year! Check out other reviews in the reviews section. A must for fans of Megaptera, Negru Voda, and all things Peter Nystrom. Sharing similarites with the works of Michael Mantra and some of the early Nova Zembla releases, this set of 6 tracks will take you on a gentle, soothing and above all engaging ride using swathes of textures, background sounds and occasional moments of more challenging sound. It always flows back to the depth though and will fill you with gladness that there are people out there still producing this style of luscious music. CD-R paranoid foundation = the music of chance (paranoid foundation)

'This time Paranoid Foundation has produced a totally ambient, electronic album probably with only synthesizers and all the songs except the couple last ones also have some spoken words. The very hallucinatory, floating "Remote" begins the album in a great way, and the mood is maintained pretty much the same for the whole, about 35 minutes long album. "The London Inducement" takes the listener into some other, weird reality. "Halcyon" has a somehow twisted soundscape. "What Remains of Us" includes a bit more industrial sounds. Only the track "The Future" has some more identifiable notes too, otherwise they just swell in weird, dark soundscapes. The dark, monotonic and effective narration on the tracks brings the album a very deep, a little bit sinister atmosphere. The only correct way to listen to this album is in a horizontal position with earphones on, somewhere on the border of sleep and wake state a really psychedelic experience is guaranteed.'

CD-R PHOLDE  "Aperture of the Internal Surface" (Afe Records)

Dark Ambient / Sound Art / Experimental. Pholde is the dark ambient project of sound artist Alan Bloor who is also known for his extreme noise music project called Knurl. In the late '80s he began performing noise backgrounds at poetry readings in which he experimented with his bass guitar by placing metal objects on the strings to produce the sounds. Since that time, Bloor has delved heavily into experimentation with found objects as sound sources. While Knurl unleashes harsh noise performances and side-project Pyrox creates intense electronic drones, Pholde creates dark ambient soundscapes by the bowing and scraping of self-created metal sound-sculptures with hand files, smooth and threaded metal rods, angle iron and blocks of steel to produce atmospheric, haunting soundscapes. His music was released on many labels worldwide, including Alien8 Recordings, Gears of Sand, Mystery Sea, RRRecords, Taâlem and Troniks. As usually happened with all previous Pholde's works, the two pieces on "Aperture of the Internal Structure" were produced and recorded by Alan in single sessions without any overdub, using only his sound-sculptures as source material aided by reverb and some equalization...

CD Red Square v/a (Kultfront)

The third release of the Russian label KultFront is a compilation entitled "Red Square". 16 Russian industrial projects have contributed exclusive tracks for this compilation. There was a simple task given to the musicians - to try to express their attitude to revolution in general and to National-Bolshevism in particular. Maliciously, tricky, pathetically, cosmically, intelligently - it's all went different. That's why the result is a very diverse in style and hard to listen all-at-once, but distinctly rich flavoured industrial mass. Fragile cardboard sleeve symbolizes the frailty of existence while the CD itself is done in the form of steel armoured train wheel. Just as revolution absorbs absolutely everything, the music and design of this release include completely incompatible, sometimes diametrically opposed things. Intro and Outro contain the recordings made during revolutionary mass-meeting in St. Petersburg at November 7, 2004. Among the contributors are: Linija Mass, Rupor Udara (pre-Anthesteria), Majdanek Waltz, Noises Of Russia (Shumy Rossii), Kryptogen Rundfunk, and many others- Ltd. to 500 numbered copies in a special envelope with inserts. Dark Rivers is the sonic exploration and reflection of a particular stretch of landscape in the north of England. This is the home of Rapoon’s Robin Storey and it is an essential part of who he is.

"Dark Rivers is about a particular area in the North of England which stretches from the Solway Firth into the wastelands of the Northumbrian borders. This area is steeped in history and mystery. In particular, I have focused on the development of Britain's Cold War intercontinental ballistic missile weaponry in the late forties and fifties and which later became the center for Britain's space efforts. The idea that these top secret research bases were sited here is one of interest in itself. The area is historically renowned for its outlaws and geographical and political marginalism. Geographically, this is where the Roman Empire stopped and long before that this is an area that has the highest count of pre-historic rock glyphs anywhere in the world. Many of the place names reflect the ancient cultural beliefs and superstitions - Black Fell, Black Beck, etc. Even today the place is wild and remote and old superstitions live on. The conflict of the ancient superstitions and the cold war paranoia is essentially what this is about. The older superstitions swallowing whole the newer age which came and went on the same dark, brooding hills. I was lucky enough to be born and grow up here and the darkness of the place is embedded deeply inside me."

CD RETARDER  "enquiries" (Tourette)

Musique électronique et instrumentale mécanique, post-punk, dark ambient et dark folk.

I’ve been waiting for this one to come for quite a while. The solo debut of Lloyd James, known for what he has done in NAEVUS for the last decade. Rumors about this commitment found their way to me shortly after ”Silent Life” and I thought to myself that ”gotta sound like Clapton” but no no no. As RETARDER, Lloyd sets out on a very edgy and stormy voyage, full of obstacles to overcome. It’s very experimental, most of this material could possibly destroy a NAEVUS album and sometimes, it’s even more weird than that LARK BLAMES album he did together with Marc Blackie (SLEEPING PICTURES). Not two tracks sound the same but that’s just a statement I establish and, it’s neither positive nor negative, it’s just the way it is. The intro is a long and exhausting piano improvisation with some horns hidden underneath. Could probably call it arty or something. It doesn’t sound too good, which is probably the whole idea, but it does something with you and you will feel like... Empty afterwards. The second track has a slightly proto post-punk feeling, a simple, mechanic riff and a vocal loop is the core and I must say it sounds quite cool. ”Tongue in the Wind” takes the listener on a multi-layered ambient trip, where spacey sounds are mixed with something that resembles a theremin. Track four is called ”Father Duncan” and it’s probably the least experimental one, actually, it could be a NAEVUS song with that strummed guitar and simple drum pattern. We’re also given some Lloyd-singing and pretty nice lyrics as usual when he’s the author. A nice track and a well deserved break between all the madness that went by and that awaits; ten seconds into the fifth track you’ll succumb to the feberish nightmare sounds, could probably go under the parole noise lite. ’Tis really lots of deranged and distorted sounds swirling around and around for about, what it feels like, half the day, and it’s a really scary track if you ask me.

CD SKINWELL - Tunnels (Angle Records)

Doors cleverly concealed…unexplored abandoned industrial sites….the angleREC and Mondes Elliptiques labels had the opportunity to work with many sound artists whose explorations are accompanied by a will to uncover on the field, in the abstract as well as in the concrete, different mysteries or secrets, or at least, to probe the enclave, the place they haunt. The SKINWELL project is no exception; its two protagonists, CHRISTIAN CORVELLEC and MARTIN DUMAIS, concoct music for TUNNELS, those places, where, at the end, one is beginnning to see the light, as the old proverb says, but in the present case, we do not really care; we can see the light in the distance, it also penetrates different interstices or fissures along the walls of the tunnels where we progress, but we prefer taking the time to pace the premises, to permeate ourselves with the sound echoes with which they fill our ears and head, and it should be mentioned that the ambiant-drone styling embraced by SKINWELL contains, like the music of some well-know artists of the genre (here we shall name CRANIOCLAST, TROUM or ZOVIET FRANCE with the unique goal of giving people a better idea as to where they are on the map of sonorities), a whole assortment of subtle electronic pulsations, concocted here by CHRISTIAN CORVELLEC, which always adequately support the sound fabrics woven by MARTIN DUMAIS, and which also are their starting point. One only has to imagine a minimal tech project gone the drone-ocean way …pulsations are there, always, but tinged with a sonic fog that is heavy, damp and fluid at the same time and which always suggests, in the end, uncertain twists and turns in this crossing of tunnels. But who would complain? SKINWELL represents the first musical project on disc involving CHRISTIAN CORVELLEC. On TUNNELS, with MARTIN DUMAIS he seals an alliance of the most fruitful nature, whose initial results gained, right at the beginning, general consensus among fans of ambient-noise and drone looking for new sensations. For his part, MARTIN DUMAIS has been part of Montreal’s electronic and exploratory music scenes for the last 20 years. He mainly gained attention with his ODDS industrial project towards the end of the 80s, his techno ventures JUICEBOX (with Marc Leclair aka AKUFEN) and LES JARDINIERS, and finally his current psych-drone project, AUN (with three CDS on ORAL in Montreal and one on CRUCIAL BLAST in the United States).

CD-R stillstand = kreuzung (tosom)

'Kreuzung' is the third release by Stillstand on Tosom (see also Vital Weekly 316) and it's project of Martin Steinebach, who also works as Conscientia Peccati and Monoid. The CDR is subtitled 'Drei Akutische Verkehrsbeobachtungen', meaning 'three acoustic views of traffic'. It is entirely based on a sixty minute recording of traffic, split out in three seperate tracks. There is some additional information in the package, but none of which tells us what it is that Stillstand does with the source material. In some odd way, the traffic itself is hard to be noted in these recordings except for the third track, and some eroded sound is what remains. With this release Stillstand continues to play the classic ambient industrial card, but he does it quite well. Deeply atmospheric, even when it's a bit low end and low-fi, with minimalist changes throughout. Quite nice.review by Frans de Waard

CD Thelema "Burnt memories" (small voices)

"Burnt Memories" is the fourth Thelema album. Nine years after their last release "Night of Pan", the Italian dark Wave band par excellence have finished a new collection of songs. The band was born in the winter of 1984, when former Throbs of Pleasure Giorgio Parmigiani and former Les Blousons Noirs Massimo Mantovani met in some punk rehersal room in Modena, their hometown. The third original member was former T.A.C. member Gregorio Bardini, and together they gave birth to a band influenced by the ideas, philosophy and magickal opus of Aleister Crowley. 'Thelema' was the obvious choice for a name. Thelema were immediately hailed as one of the best gothic bands in Italy, even if their roots were punk and their leanings were more towards experimental and industrial sounds, as the many tapes produced through the years testify. The original cell, Giorgio and Massimo, has never been broken, altough many other musicians have joined them through the years. "Burnt Memories" contains 12 catchy songs, more in the neo-folk vein this time. Obviously influenced by mr. Crowley, Thelema nevertheless make it their own. And it works perfectly well.(some place else)

CD Temple Music "Incompleteness"  (faria records)

This is joint edition of Faria Records and Shining Day. “INCOMPLETENESS” is the all new album from the visionary duo of TEMPLE MUSIC, beautifully presented in typical Faria fashion with 4 full colour inserts in an immaculate art housing... In 1931, the Czech-born mathematician Kurt Goedel demonstrated that within any given branch of mathematics, there would always be some propositions that couldn't be proven either true or false using the rules and axioms of that mathematical branch itself... the implication is that all logical system of any complexity are, by definition, incomplete; each of them contains, at any given time, more true statements than it can possibly prove according to its own defining set of rules. This implies that you'll never entirely understand yourself, since your mind, like any other closed system, can only be sure of what it knows about itself by relying on what it knows about itself. TEMPLE MUSIC'S Alan Trench and Stephen Robinson have used both the implications of Gцdel's theorem and the doctrine of anamorphosis to compose and fashion an album of 4 interconnected and complementary tracks that somehow look both forward and back; that juxtapose the old and the new into an organic whole of both sacred and temporal instruments - Indian harmonium and shruti box, plucked and hammered dulcimers, bodhrans, mosenos, various flageolets, synthesisers and keyboards, guitars, bass, Tibetan bells and singing bowls - 4 drifting shards of ethereal and sometimes frightening beauty, rose petals on the snow that are finally revealed to be tiny, perfect drops of crystalline blood... Tracy Jeffery of Orchis, Cunnan and SQE contributes to 2 tracks: vocals to Elemental and harp to Anamorphosis

First cut CDR Anita Hofer and Rens Kloeckl released a live recording from 2001 under the banner Toise. Their live material consists of rhythmic particles with a machine-like structure. The music reminds of Esplendor Geometrico, the Spanish pioneers in rhythmic industrial. The sound quality and production could have been better and the intents to make use of several rhythmic structures in one song do not improve the total image. Somehow the overall impression is that of 1980's industrial cassette releases, giving me a nostalgic feeling. Review by Paul Bijlsma of Phosphor Magazine

The B-side included several of those arrangements combined together for temporary unified action. 45 minutes of the most primitive analogue destruction, leaving no place for easy listening or relaxing moments. Coarse sounds of tape loops, manipulation and electronics make this into difficult industrial-noise. Trait is one of the most vicious works of Eric Lunde (Boy Dirt Car). The material has been transferred from the original master tapes by the artist himself, leaving everything 100% as is. The artwork is faithful to the original release, replicating the it as accurately as possible.

'I knew Her' is a 40-minute long journey of heart-melting, melancholic and neo-symphonic splendour - full of choirs, strings and neoclassical orchestration. This solitary track builds to a haunting and breathtaking crescendo... then brings the listener gently back down to the warm earth. A truly monumental release, with influences ranging from Sigur Rós to Philip Glass and Stars Of The Lid.

CD-R ÜL "III" (Zhelezobeton)

ÜL was formed in 2006 by Argentinians Alan Courtis (Reynols), Fernando Perales and Charly Zaragoza. They have performed live many times in Argentina and released two albums: "Astropecuario" on the Scottish label Pjorn Records and "II" on the Argentinian Facon Records. This is their third disk containing material recorded in 2007. The goal of ÜL is the exploration of timbric possibilities of electric guitars in their own way, combining elements of noise, drone music and free atonal improvisation. Their compositions immerse the listener into an abstract world of electromagnetic interaction between acoustic and electronic medium. A world glutted with raw sounds of string vibrations, droney feedback resonances, acute work of limiting amplifiers and layering echoes of effects.

CD UR - 'Trieb' (Topheth Prophet)

Ur was born from the collaboration between Federico Esposito and Mauro Sciaccaluga, both hailing from the hardcore-punk scene. The two joined in 2003 to create a new entity. Andrea Ferraris joined the band in early 2005. Ur's music is mostly based on improvisation that usually starts with drones or samples (with no pre-defined structure), over which they superimpose layers of electro-acoustic noisescapes coming from objects, field recordings, analog and traditional instruments processed using a load of pedals and effects. The sound paints a solid, harsh and dramatic industrial lounge where archaic instincts and modern obsessions meet. Outsized folder. Ltd x 300. Israeli import.

CD URANIUM USSR 1972 (KIRLIAN KAMERA) - AVARIE (Small voices)

Solo project of Angelo Bergamini Kirlian Camera A chapter apart in the history of ambient-trance music to be signed by Kirlian Camera's Angelo Bergamini: intellectual and proudly anti-intellectual at once, able to evoke strange and sometimes nervous alien urban worlds. Intimately powerful and innovative, this long awaited UU72 "opera prima" is a successful combination of new electronic horizons and retro vintage machines reaching a personal language, not paying any debt to any "experimentalists" in particular. Once again, Bergamini surprises us with a brand new idea, going to give life to a restless and rainy scenery made of extreme solitude, alienated rhythms and touching moments, all permeated by an unusual and fair sense of black humour. If one would like to listen to real "songs-of-the-machines" with no useless old-school attitude, this is the best direction to drive to!!! Beautiful and stylishly sumptuous artwork by Elena Alice Fossi (co-leader/singer/composer of Kirlian Camera) here appearing as a extraordinary graphic artists, someway echoing Euro-Spanish modern design turned into colder lines, not spurning a brilliant touch of fresh and hi-class "industrial glamour." Surely the best design work ever from this versatile young talent! In short, an album that might modify old "atmospheric music" concepts, surely far from both dark-ambient in general and "à-la-Eno" orientations! An album rich of intuitions and generously free of pc/mac prepacked solutions, still keeping a link with that magic called "music"!!!

CD Violet = violet ray gas and the playback (zeromoon)

Quite an intriguing burst of dark electronic and sample noise from Violet, whose Violet Ray Gas and The Playback Singers (ZEROMOON zero008 / SENTIENT RECOGNITION ARCHIVE SRA 10) is released in a digipack covered with Futurist-inspired monochrome images full of harsh diagonals and fuzzy dreams of the machine age. Jeff Surak arrives here from Washington DC, a hero of the 1980s cassette tape scene when he used to release music under his 1348 alias and ran his Watergate Tapes label. Consequently we can hear much stern authority and grainy power in these grim process-works. My fave so far is the opener ‘All Records Collapse’, with its implacable radio voice plucked from an indeterminate Eastern European zone, but ‘Snakehead Lapping’, ‘Plague Numbers’ and ‘Marionetki’ all communicate the requisite doses of futility. Two long tracks at the end, ‘Violet Ray Gas’ and ‘Interior Ghosts’, are somewhat more musical than atmospheric, shaped from queasy long-form drones tempered with alien sounds. Surak strives to offer ‘near-silence’ and ‘full-on tonal Brutalism’, with all shades in between. - The Sound Projector

This release was original released on Kim Cascone's Silent records in February 1996. Nocturnal drone music created with a sprawling array of tape-loops, analog effects, modular synthesizers, 1980's samplers, alien shortwave radios, and field recordings made during peak-periods of paranormal activity. These sounds take on a majestic beauty and magic with repeated listens.

(ritual music/"a heady blend of music so full of love and the lust for life that the joy it brings is unsurpassable. The drifting sweeping passages brings forth a message of hope and joy in these darkened times of unrest and uncertainty. A simple drum beat is forged through the layers of iridescent patterns of electronic waves creating the ultimate dreamscapes in which to lose oneself. Journeying onward you encounter subtle drones and shaman chants that take you into another dimension freeing the burdened soul. Every one of the nineteen tracks are so varied and different in their execution and yet they meld together seamlessly into one complete portion of music that eludes description."... )

CD Y.E.R.M.O. - Collision Zone (Idiosyncratics records)

This album is a musical extension of a soundtrack produced by Y.E.R.M.O. in collaboration with conceptual and visual artists Nadine Hilbert & Gast Bouschet for the Luxembourg Pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale (running till november 2009).

The music is an invocation of the coldness and cruelty of a borderzone between two worlds and a transmutation of fear into euphoria. The album is a unique piece of immersive ritual sounds, dominated by loud, distorded guitars, hypnotic percussions and industrial drones within rain-soaked Mediterranean landscapes.

-Field recordings & artwork by Nadine Hilbert & Gast Bouschet -Additional drums by Jason Van Gulick -Mastered by James Plotkin

CD Zilverhill "Eötvös"(Adeptsound)

"Zilverhill takes us into vivid, disturbing soundscapes that bring the listener into another reality.
Zilverhill is a collaboration between the experimental artists Schuster (a.k.a. Tim Bayes, hailing from Perth, Australia) and pRESENT dAY bUNA. (a.k.a. Paul Carr, from Sheffield, England). Both these artists have an extensive history stretching back to the early '80s. However, +Eötvös+ has all the trappings of great modern production.
The album opens with the lengthy "Veris," which centers around a droning, phased D note, but occasionally twitches with the odd vocal sample. "Aiken" is where the album becomes interesting; a low-fi, glitchy synth is coupled with walls upon walls of sampled phone diatribe. "Proven" traps the listener in what seems like a giant clock (one the size of Kansas) where we hear everything from small gears grinding to the various faunae running about within. Perhaps the strangest track on the album is the displaced "Ominous" with its quiet piano aside the narrative of a woman recounting abusive family incest. "Hiding" seems to follow suit with its sampled unsettling screaming throughout. The album closes with the epic "Saarinen," which overwhelms the listener with a sea of disenfranchised noise.
There really aren't any shortcomings to this atonal work, aside from the dismissible 12-minute opener and the incredibly unsettling nature of some of these recordings, which might draw a large cross-section of listeners in. If there's any work that +Eötvös+ would draw any parallel to in terms of atmosphere, it would be Coil's classic How to Destroy Angels, except with incredibly modern methods of generating the disembodied sounds within.
A fair warning to any potential listener: don't listen to this while driving alone. Your mind will drift away to alien places where they haven't been before, but have always seemingly wanted to go."

CD Zilverhill, "Latent-Active-Descent" (Adeptsound)

This second collaboration between these two veterans of the 1980s UK noise/cassette underground is enigmatically rooted in the works of Lewis Carroll and schizophrenic outsider artist August Natterer. The result is an engaging, yet temporally dislocated, foray into ambient industrial music that sometimes favorably recalls some of Cabaret Voltaire's more abstract and loop-based moments (as well as a host of darker, and more sociopathic, tape-based experimentalists).

7" ZYRTAX VS UBIQUE DAEMON (Dead Mind Records)

This mail collaboration between Zyrtax and Ubique Daemon (aka Fever Spoor) blends a spacey vibe with avant-garde banquets of sounds and industrial beats. Side A is an exercise in bad-dream circuit squiggle grounded by dark noise, ending in sirens and the clatter of urban decay in a rainy night. Halfway through allowing all sorts of weird electronic loops and eerie chopped up samples to crawl out of dark corners. The B side fills your head with minimalist, martial industrial rhythms, surreal noise loops and ultra squeaky beats, like classic 80's Wax Trax dance music for cartoon robot mice. Slipped inside a translucent blue n' black sleeve, comes with a vinyl sticker and insert card.
